Three things nobody tells you before your first shift. One: the ID scanner is not a lie detector — it tells you a document is fake, not that the customer is hostile. Two: not every non-human is a threat; Norbert scans as a fake ID on Night 2 and is completely harmless. Three: one enemy in this game cannot be fought at all, and if you try, you die. What Shift At Midnight actually is

Shift At Midnight is a co-op survival horror game built by solo developer Bun Muen and published by Kwalee. It released on 22 July 2026 for Steam, Xbox Series X|S and the Microsoft Store, and it landed on Xbox Game Pass on day one. It is an Xbox Play Anywhere title, which matters more than it sounds — that single detail is why the crossplay answer is messy.

The loop is a shift. You clock in at a gas station, and customers arrive. Your job is to serve them, keep the shelves stocked and hit a quota. The complication is that some customers are doppelgangers — entities that copy a human's appearance, voice, mannerisms and backstory well enough to walk through the door and ask for cigarettes. You have an ID verification computer and your own judgement, and you have to decide who gets served and who gets dealt with.

Get it wrong in the generous direction and something comes through the door that shouldn't have. Get it wrong in the other direction and you have killed a paying customer, which the game is happy to let you do — the most common achievement in the entire game, held by 96.6% of players, is called First Blood and it unlocks for killing your first customer. That statistic is a design statement.

Every named threat

Most of what kills you has a name, and the names matter because the counterplay is completely different for each one. There is no universal answer — the tool that saves you from one of these gets you killed by another.

Marionette Boss. Tied to a wind-up music box. Only 35.1% of players have killed one. The Dentist Eight feet tall, invisible to the ID computer. No weapon, trap or barricade works. You run. Jack-in-the-Box Wind it or it springs. The same box decides whether the Marionette fight is survivable. Shrieking Doll Crawler that screams to pull your attention, then follows you. Demented Killing one unlocks Freed — held by 75.3% of players. Norbert Not a threat. A gnome with a fake ID who shows up on Night 2 to cause chaos.

Doppelgangers are the actual game

The monsters get the attention, but the thing you spend most of a shift doing is deciding whether the person at the counter is human. Doppelgangers mimic look, voice, mannerisms and background. The ID verification computer is your primary tool, and it has a specific, narrow function: it tells you whether the document is authentic. It does not tell you whether the holder is human.

That gap is where the game lives. Norbert is the cleanest illustration — his ID scans as fake, he is openly not what he claims to be, and he will not hurt you. Meanwhile the Dentist does not register on the computer at all. A player who has learned "fake ID equals kill" will kill Norbert and get ambushed by something the scanner never flagged.

Content note

Steam labels this game as containing "plenty of gore and blood". It is a horror game about deciding whether to kill the person in front of you, and it does not soften that.
